Copacabana The Musical
Where:
Chelmsford
When:
Tuesday, 28/02/2012
Time: 7.30pm
Cost: £14.00 to £16.00
Information: 'Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl ...’ – it’s near impossible not to know the opening line of Barry Manilow’s Grammy Award-winning hit, and hard not to be intrigued by its exotic story. So salsa down to the Civic Theatre to enjoy Chelmsford Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society’s latest lavish musical ‘Copacabana’, February 28th - March 3rd 2012. The show centres on the familiar story of a New York bound small-town girl who finds glamour as a night club showgirl; love with a sweet wannabe tunesmith; and big trouble via a gangster and rival night club owner. In this case the New York to which she comes is that of the swing-time 1940’s, providing post-war glitz to the Manhattan set. There’s a real feel good factor in caods ‘Copacabana’ with sassy choreography and stage direction from Sallie Warrington. The company effortlessly switch roles and play with panache in what is a passionate, high energy production, and caods polished ‘Copacabana’ sparkles as brightly as the feather crowned spangly costumes. Singing, under the expert baton of musical director Stuart Woolner is clean and crisp with his clever understanding allowing the music to serve the ebb and flow of the narrative. ‘Copacabana’s catchy razzmatazz will appeal to theatre goers of all ages – not just those who grew up through the 1970’s. 'Napoli' (The Fisherman and his Bride)
Where:
The Civic Theatre, Fairfield Road, Chelmsford, CM1 1JG
When:
Wednesday, 14/03/2012
Time: 19.30
Cost: £11.00 - £12.25
Information: The Chelmsford Ballet Company is delighted to present a fresh and exciting adaptation of “Napoli”. (The Fisherman and his Bride) A humorous and colourful ballet that progresses from bustling fun to near tragedy; but the powers of love and faith ensure a happy ending. The story, set in a small Italian fishing village, begins with the comical antics of a macaroni seller and a lemonade seller as they jostle with the village fishermen and vie for the hand of the beautiful heroine. A dramatic storm blows up setting the scene for heart-break; a magical and captivating underwater scene follows. The story finally ends safely on land with a wedding, a colourful Tarantella and a lively, fun, Italian street party. ‘Napoli’ was created by August Bournonville in 1842 for the Danish Royal Ballet. It uses the music of various composers (Paulli, Lumbye, Gade and Helsted) and draws on operatic arias including Rossini's "Barber of Seville" for inspiration.
